Designed by Drops Design and available at Garn Studio, the Black Thunder Sweater is easy to crochet as it is made in a simple double crochet. Knowledge of changing colors in the middle of a row would be helpful, however, the pattern link contains a video link on how to crochet using multiple colors.
Garn Studios always has gorgeous designs, however, I have trouble finding Drops Yarns in Canada. The pattern is written for Drops Air yarn, which is an Aran/Worsted 10 ply (Size 4) yarn consisting of alpaca, polyamide and wool. You could substitute any Aran weight yarn of your choice. Substitutes for this yarn would be Paintbox Simply Aran, or Caron Simply Soft – both are 100% acrylic. If you prefer cotton Paintbox also has Cotton Aran. If you want to stick with alpaca, try KnitPicks Simply Alpaca Aran
Remember, whenever, you substitute yarns to check your gauge VERY carefully. Adjust your hook size if necessary to match your gauge to that of the pattern. If you get too many stitches on 4” (10 cm), change to a larger hook size. If you get too few stitches on 4” (10 cm), change to a smaller hook size.
To make the Black Thunder sweater, you will need the following supplies:
- 6-9 oz. (200-300 grams) of Black yarn (depending on size)
- 4.5 – 6 oz. (150-200 grams) of Medium Grey
- 3 – 4.5 oz (100-150 grams) of Off White
- US H/8 (5.00 mm) Crochet Hook
