I have had a few requests to find a market bag that would be big and sturdy yet fashionable. This may be the winner.
Easy to make even for beginners, this bag is designed to be used as a market bag or grocery bag. But it is so pretty, you may find yourself using it for a number of occasions.

Designed by I Think I Sew, the finished bag measures an extra large 20 inches wide by 15 inches wide and 6 inches deep.
This bag has extra-secure handles which makes it a perfect bag to carry many heavy items in.
NOTE FROM NANA – It is easy to add an inside pocket simply by sewing a square of fabric the size desired to the right side of the lining. To make it even easier, cut two rectangles the size of desired pocket plus one inch. Using a 1/2″ seam allowance sew right sides together leaving a hole for turning. Press well making sure to press the unsewn section under. Topstitch 3 sides to lining leaving fourth side open for pocket. You may make an extra long rectangle and sew from the bottom to the top of the pocket making 2-3 separate compartments to your pocket. Stay tuned for a tutorial on What’s Nana Making site!
The designer recommends using a heavyweight home decorating fabric such canvas or cotton duck to make the bag more sturdy. Try some of the bright and colorful outdoor fabrics. Or choose your favorite quilting cotton combined with an optional fusible interfacing.
To make the Market Bag, you will need the following supplies:
- 1/2 yard of printed exterior fabric
- 1/2 yard of solid exterior fabric
- 1 yard of fabric for the lining (I prefer cotton or a light polyester)
- 2 yards of 22″ wide fusible interfacing (optional)
- One 18mm magnetic snap
- 78 inches of 1″ webbing for handles. You can buy almost every color HERE
- Coordinating thread
There are so many choices of fabric you can use to make this bag. Use an ocean themed fabric and use the bag for a beach bag. How about a book bag? Or make a few to store your unfinished projects in.
