There is no real “pattern” for creating a jelly roll rug. You are limited only by your imagination. Basically, 2-1/2″ batting strips are covered with jelly rolls and sewn together to create a gorgeous rug. You can make your rug any shape or size you desire.
What is a jelly roll? Jelly Rolls are collections of 2 1/2″ x 42″ strips of fabric produced by Moda Fabrics. Jelly Rolls typically include 40 strips of fabric but can vary. Other fabric manufacturers offer similar products such as Pops, Roll Ups, Rolie Polies, Strip Sets, etc.
Jelly Rolls are available at your favorite fabric retailer. Nana’s favorite place for Jelly Rolls are the Fat Quarter Shop and Connecting Threads
Can’t find what you are looking for? Buy your fabric by the yard and make your own or (even better) use your stash!!
There are many patterns out there for Jelly Roll Rugs, but Nana found a fabulous FREE tutorial that shows you how to create both an oval and rectangle rug (see link at end of post). Lynn Woll from Create Whimsy explains EVERYTHING you need to know about Jelly Roll Rugs.
To create an oval Jelly Roll rug approximately 3 feet by 4 feet, you will need the following supplies:
- One Jelly Roll or 42 – 2-1/2″ x WOF strips.
- Two rolls of precut 2-1/2″ batting or cut your own strips from yardage.
- Lots of coordinating thread!!
