Summer Split-Rail Quilt – FREE pattern

Doesn’t this quilt just scream summer!! The Summer Split-Rail quilt is just so gorgeous and the pattern is FREE! The minute Nana saw this quilt, she knew she had to share it with all of you.

The mottled blues and greens of this complex-looking quilt call to mind a bubbling brook and a peaceful meadow.

Designed by Margie Ullery of Ribbon Candy Quilt Company, the pattern was shared by All People Quilt magazine. Rail Fence units are cut in half diagonally and pieced back together to give the design a woven look. The finished quilt measures approximately 56″ x 63″.

Make it with lovely summery batiks in blues and greens. Then add some appliqued daisies. If you need to know more about how to applique visit Nana’s Learn to Applique post

Batiks are one of my favorite types of fabrics. Batik is an Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing on fabric. I watched them make these fabrics when I visited Bali and each piece was stunning. If you can get original hand dyed batik you will find that each yard of this fabric is gorgeous and unique.

The Fat Quarter Shop has a large selection of batik fabrics in both yardage and precuts. Connecting Threads will, at times, have some great deals on batiks. Right now they have a great selection of blue batiks.

The best selection of batiks that I have found is Fabric.com where you will find over 6,000 different quilting batik choices.

To make the Summer Split-Rail quilt, you will need the following supplies:

  • 1-5⁄8 yards total assorted batiks in blue, green, and aqua for the pieced blocks and vertical rows (hint: you could use 7 fat quarters for this)
  • 7⁄8 yard mottled blue-and-green batik for sashing and corner triangles
  • 2 yards light green batik for squares and border
  • 3⁄4 yard mottled blue batik for applique flowers and binding
  • 5″ square lime green batik for flower centers
  • 1⁄3 yard green batik for applique leaves and vines
  • Heat n bond light fusible web
  •  3-5⁄8 yards backing fabric – OR see Nana’s post on how to create a stunning quilt backing.
  • 65×71″ batting
  • Coordinating thread
