Designed by Sarah of Repeat Crafter Me, the finished bag measures approximately 11 inches wide by 12 inches tall not including the handles.
The pattern uses two strands of Bernat Super Value worsted weight (Size 4) yarn. Nana had trouble finding a bright red in this yarn, but remember you can substitute any Size 4 yarn in this pattern.
Using two strands of yarn makes the bag extremely sturdy and the single crochet stitches fill in so nicely with no holes and less stretching. Sarah provides tips on how to crochet with two strands.
To make the Christmas Tote Bags, you will need the following supplies:
- Bernat Super Value Yarn in White, Berry Red, Black, and Bright Yellow (Topaz, White and Red for the Gingerbread)
- Size I (5.5mm) Crochet Hook
- Black buttons
- Yarn Needle
Sarah also designed some Halloween totes. You can find out more HERE.

How cute, I like them! Thanks so much for linking up with me at #AThemedLinkup 36 for Christmas Crafts and Décor, open until December 17 at 12:05 am. Shared on social media.
Great pattern. I use the same steps to do a Christmas stocking starting at the bottom of the stocking…super easy and no shaping required.
Wow. Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
when you join in first single crochet and chain 1, do you do a single crochet in the same stitch as joined?? I cant get the count right at the end. I always have 2 extgra stitches.
Mary,
The stitch used is a simple single crochet across the row. I am not sure what you are doing wrong. Perhaps these instructions on how to single crochet a block will help. https://whatsnanamaking.com/learn-to-crochet-2b/. Good luck!

Do you have any suggestions Joe how to make a smaller version of these adorable totes?
Paula,
The only thing I can suggest is using a lighter weight yarn or smaller hook. The pattern uses two strands of Size 4 yarn. One strand and a smaller hook should result in a smaller bag. Check your gauge. Hope this helps!!
