I was really missing my grandsons today, so what would be more fitting than to post a quilt pattern suitable for boys. What I found was this awesome truck quilt.
GET CREATIVE!!
This pattern was designed by Lydia Nelson of Dreamy Quilts for Moda Fabrics and is available at the Fat Quarter Shop. The pattern caught my attention because you can get very creative making the 20 different trucks.
The truck quilt measures 41 inches by 46 inches when complete – just perfect for a toddler to snuggle. The truck quilt is easy to make and includes instructions on how to sew a diagonal.
Although the pattern indicates to use a Jelly Roll to create the 20 different trucks, this would also be a fabulous stash buster. Each truck requires a piece of fabric approximately 2-1/2 inches by 11 inches.
- 1 Jelly Roll or enough stash to create 20 trucks
- ¼ yard fabric for windshields
- 1½ yards background fabric
- ½ yard border fabric
- 1 black/dark grey Fat Quarter for wheels
- ½ yard light fusible web for wheels
- ½ yard for binding
- 3 yards for backing or create something stunning with these ideas
- 52’’ x 54’’ cotton batting
The wheels of the truck are appliqued to the pieced trucks. If you need help with applique, visit our sister site to “Learn to Applique“. The post includes tips on how to applique curves and circles.
I hope you will enjoy creating your trucks!! Show me a picture of how you used this pattern. Leave me a comment below!!
Thank you so much for the pattern and directions. I have completed my quilt top and love it. What are your recommendations for machine quilting. I’m a beginner and FMQ is above my skill level. Any ideas for straight lines with a walking foot?
Marque,
I think I might be inclined to “shadow” the trucks. That is, quilt 1/4 inch or less around the truck. You could also simply “stitch in the ditch”.
Hope this helps. Please post your finished project on my instagram feed @whatsnanamking19.
