Never Forget Them Memory Quilts

Today marks the 18th anniversary of that fateful day that we all remember. Everyone around the world has their own “story” of where we were when we heard the news and the shock and sadness that echoed throughout the world.

Whether your memories are good or tragic, the loss of a loved one or a special life event can be preserved forever by creating your own memory quilt.

Memory quilts are a great way to remember or celebrate your family history, the life of a loved one or an important event in your life.

Many memorial quilts are made from a loved ones clothing after they die. But not all memory quilts are constructed based around losing a loved one, they can represent a change or growth in life.

Use baby clothes to create memories for when they grow up. The blanket he came home from the hospital in, the overalls he wore while learning to crawl, the flannel pajamas he fell asleep in at night.

Old team or school uniforms for an alumni, work shirts for a retiree, or vacation or band tees can make an awesome heirloom. Photos can also be transferred to fabric to make a quilt of memories which the whole family can enjoy.

To make a memory quilt, you will need the following supplies:

  • Simple quilt pattern (optional). I have provided a link to a great beginner quilt at the end of this post. I love it because the sashing highlights the special memory you want to preserve.
  • Memory fabrics. Wash and fussy cut these into workable squares.
  • Background and binding fabrics
  • Batting -sized to match the quilt
  • Coordinating thread

Here is a memory quilt that I made for a friend from country music T-shirts that a grandfather used to love! It was made for his grandson. Check out Pinterest for more great ideas!

The quilt label reads “To my grandson, These are the shirts I used to wear, Whenever you hold it remember I am there. With love, Grandpa”

Suzy Quilts, who designed the pattern in the link, also has a fabulous post on how to design your memory quilt. You can read it HERE
