The star layer cakes quilt is part of the Fat Quarter Shop’s shortcut quilt series. This pattern is written to make a lap sized quilt approximately 72″ x 90″ but also includes instructions to adapt the pattern to make a crib sized quilt, twin size, queen and king sized. You will also find a video to help you with cutting and piecing.
Star Cakes Blocks measure 16” x 16”. Use one for a pillow or three for a table runner. The crib size quilt measures approximately 37″ x 37″ which also makes a great size for a table topper.
Using pre-cut layer cakes, you can make this quilt quickly and easily. Layer Cakes are collections of 10″ x 10″ squares of fabric made by Moda Fabrics. Layer Cakes are available by collection so all the fabrics coordinate with each. They typically include 42 pieces of fabric, though the number may vary. Other manufacturers produce similar products such as Stackers, Ten by Tens and 10″ Squares.
To make this quilt you will need both a solid and a printed layer cake. For a great collection of solids, try Connecting Threads. And of course, the Fat Quarter Shop is famous for their pre-cuts and usually has the largest selection of layer cakes that I have found.
The quilt is created using Half Square Triangles (HST’s) placed in such a way to create a pinwheel. Using layer cakes, it is easy to create your HST’s four at a time. Nana explains how to make HST’s in this post.
