Designed by J.H. Winter, this pattern contains detailed instructions on how to make the Happy Sunflower. She also provides several videos on how-to crochet the head and stem as well as the embroidery for the face and how-to assemble your sunflower. The finished sunflower will be approximately 10 inches high.

Ms. Winter uses Red Heart Super Saver yarn to make her sunflowers, however, you may substitute your favorite yarn in this pattern. Red Heart Super Saver yarn is a worsted weight (Size 4) acrylic yarn. Nana prefers to use cotton when crocheting amigurumi because I find there is less stretch when stuffing. One of my favorites is Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK (Size 3) or Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran (Size 4).

Gauge is not important so a softer, thinner yarn will make your sunflower smaller in size; rougher, thicker yarn will make your sunflower larger.  Ms. Winter does, however, recommend using the same brand of yarn for the entire project. If you change the size of the yarn, be sure to change the size of your hook accordingly.

    1. Jo,
When I published this post in June, 2020, the pattern was offered for free. At times, the designer will begin charging a fee for the pattern especially if it becomes popular. Unfortunately, I cannot monitor all the patterns and appreciate feedback from my readers. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I have now changed to the post to inform my readers of the small fee. So sorry for the inconvenience it caused you. I hope you enjoy the pattern. These flowers are really cute.

  1. I am currently crocheting the leaves on this pattern. On row 9 it says crochet 7 sc, 2inc, then 8 sc, 2 inc. = 24
When I add this it equals 23.
    Same for row 11: 9 sc, 2inc, 10sc, 2 inc equaling 28. I get 27.
    Please advise.
    Yolanda

    1. Yolanda,
Reading the pattern, I believe you are missing the sc at the end of the row. Row 9 says “7sc, 2inc, 8sc, 2inc, sc” = 24.
      Hope this helps

  2. Ok….I can see if you realize after a pattern that you want to start charging……But why change a free pattern to a paid one??…..Not cool especially when I click on your link that says free and I come here only to be charged….No thanks….Hagd…..

    1. Marie,
Unfortunately, I have no control over what the designer choses to do with their patterns. As mentioned, I left the pattern on my site for others to enjoy because it was so cute. Sorry for your disappointment
