I have been blogging for quite some time now and realized that I have not included one of my own patterns in Nana’s FREE pattern index. Therefore, I introduce to you, the fast and easy Simple Squares Vintage Baby Quilt.
Spoil a new baby with this easy-to-assemble quilt that has become my go-to pattern as it is both classic and elegant because of its simplicity.

Nana designed this fast and easy baby quilt pattern to be slightly larger than most baby quilts. Your finished quilt will measure approximately 40″ x 52″. It is easily adjustable by adding or subtracting squares.
The soft minky backing (optional) keeps baby cozy and warm and eliminates the need for batting.
In her original post, Nana offers a tutorial that includes tips on choosing the fabric, cutting your squares and how to quilt the finished quilt top in no time. Nana also posted a second version called “By the Sea” in a separate blog where she teaches us how to use strip sets to make this quilt even easier.
And to make it even more simple, the quilt uses 8 fat quarter squares which can be purchased from any coordinated collection making choosing your fabric fast and easy. The Fat Quarter Shop is a great place to get those fat quarters as they has a great selection of baby-themed fat quarter bundles.
To make the Fast and Easy Baby Quilt, you will need the following supplies:
- 8 fat quarters in different patterns and colors
- ½ Yd of coordinating fabric for binding.
- 1 ¼ Yd of 60” wide minky or fleece for backing. You may also use cotton for your backing should you choose to do so. For ideas for backing see Nana’s post on how to create a stunning quilt backing
- Coordinating thread
- Crib size batting Because minky or fleece is heavier, the use of batting is optional.
I would love to see photos of your creations. Tag them on Instagram with #whatsnanamaking @whatsnanamaking2019. Nana would be thrilled to see how you used her pattern.
