Primitive Pinwheels – FREE Quilt Pattern

What a beautiful way to use your fabric scraps! The Primitive Pinwheels quilt is made from assorted fabrics combined together to become these awesome pinwheels.

This pattern, written for the intermediate quilt, uses fusible applique method to create this gorgeous lap sized quilt. Time to get out your stash and get creative!!

The Primitive Pinwheel quilt was designed by Heidi Pridemore of The Whimsical Workshop. Each block measures 8 inches square. Your finished quilt will measure 53″ x 63″ when complete. If you want it bigger simple add more blocks.

Pinwheels are created with the templates provided and appliqued to the blocks using your favorite method. To learn how to applique, check out Nana’s post on whatsnanamaking.com.

The pattern was written for the 2020 Trinkets fabric collection by Andover Fabrics. The collection consists of 40 small print fabrics that are reminiscent of vintage fabrics of the 1800’s. This pattern, however, is so versatile you can make it with any collection including your scraps!

To create the Primitive Pinwheel quilt, you will need the following supplies:

  • 20 – 1/4 yard cuts of assorted fabric for the pinwheels
  • 10 – 1/8 yard cuts of assorted fabric for the pinwheels
  • 1/2 yard of fabric for binding
  • 1/2 yard of fabric for inner border
  • 3-1/2 yards of fabric for background
  • 3-1/2 yards of fabric for backing – for backing ideas check out Nana’s post on how to create stunning quilt backing.
  • Fusible webbing
  • Twin size batting
  • Coordinating thread – applique takes LOTS of thread. Be sure to buy enough.
