This basic sweater pattern is offered by Lion Brand yarns and is written to make a finished garment in Sizes Small through to 5X. (See below for the link).

The sweater, as pictured, was crocheted using Lion Bran Re-Tweed yarn. Re-Tweed is a rustic-look Size 4 worsted weight tweed yarn that comes in an array of muted natural colors. The nubby texture created by the tweed flecks will add depth to even the most basic stitches and patterns, or show off the tweed in cables or traditional gansey patterns. And your projects will be machine washable and dryable, making them easy to use every day.

To make this men’s basic cardigan, you will need the following supplies:

  • Lion Brand Re-Tweed or equivalent size 4 yarn – see pattern for amount required
  • US Size K-10.5 (6.5 mm) crochet hook
  • stitch markers

  1. I’m making the back to basics crichet cardigan, pattern L90158. I’m doing 3x. My question is about the back. Is the back panel at the bottom supposed to look so much bigger coming out of the band? I followed the pattern, it just looks odd. Can you possibly post a picture of the back?

    1. Yes, the band is done in a ribbing stitch which is most always smaller than the body of the sweater. I would love to see your finished project!

  2. yes no matter how i read pattern cant figure out the sleeves put markers on frount and back then 2 row add 62 does not fit in between now what

    1. Deb,
The pattern states that you need to add the 62 stitches evenly between the two markers. In other words, you need to make these stitches fit. Hope this helps.

  3. I made this in an extra large and followed the directions exactly. The sweater just didn’t fit properly. It hung down in the front and was shorter in the back. Directions were easy to follow.

    1. Susan,
Sorry you had problems. I am thinking it may have been your tension changing when you got comfortable? If there are the same amount of rows in front and back, the sizes should be the same? Thanks for letting us know.

  4. I made two of these cardigans – first one the sleeves do not work so I made it up. Was nearly completing my second when feedback from first said it keeps slipping off the shoulders. I have frogged both. A friend tried to make it – I got the pattern off him – and he has frogged his too. Very frustrated that this pattern is still available 🙁

  5. Currently working this pattern…the All Sizes section on the Sleeves just doesn’t make sense. I’m working the 4X version….not sure why the length of the sleeve is smaller as the size the sweater increases. The 4X instructions say to make the sleeve 12.5 inches long….but the smallest size is 16.5 inches long. Just seems and looks wrong.
